When navigating the massive, open-world Australian bushland of Big Walk, performance and network stability are critical to the experience. Hosting a 12-player cooperative session places a heavy demand on your hardware, and because the game’s core puzzle mechanics rely entirely on proximity voice chat, a lagging network connection can completely ruin the immersion. Showing FPS and Ping on PC (Steam)
If you are playing Big Walk on a Windows PC, the easiest and most reliable way to track your performance without installing heavy third-party software is through the Steam client itself. Steam features a lightweight, built-in FPS counter that works perfectly with the game.
Follow these steps to enable the Steam FPS counter:
- Open the main Steam client window (not the game).
- Click on Steam in the top-left corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on the In-Game tab.
- Look for the dropdown menu labeled In-Game FPS Counter.
- Select the corner of the screen where you want the number to appear (e.g., Top-right).
- For better visibility against the game’s bright blue skies and green foliage, toggle on the High Contrast Color option.
While Steam easily handles the framerate, ping is a bit trickier. Because Big Walk uses a peer-to-peer listen server structure (where one player acts as the host for the other 11), ping is highly dependent on who created the lobby. Enabling Performance Metrics on Mac
Apple users playing Big Walk have access to a powerful, system-level tool called the Metal Performance HUD. Because the game utilizes Apple’s Metal graphics API to render its expansive environments, you can overlay a highly detailed diagnostic window directly onto your screen. This is particularly useful for players on older Apple Silicon chips trying to balance visual fidelity with smooth gameplay.
To enable the Metal Performance HUD for Big Walk:
- Close the game completely if it is currently running.
- Open the Terminal application (you can find this by pressing Command + Space and searching for “Terminal”).
- Type the following command exactly as written and press Enter:
defaults write -g MetalForceHudEnabled -bool true - Launch Big Walk.
You will now see a detailed, floating graph in the corner of your screen showing your exact FPS, GPU utilization, and rendering resolution. This is vastly superior to the basic Steam counter because it tells you exactly what is causing performance bottlenecks. - Delayed Responses: If you speak, and it takes two full seconds for a friend standing right next to you to react, the host’s ping is too high.
If you encounter these issues on a console, your only recourse is to pause the game, have everyone leave the lobby, and ask a different player—preferably one using a hardwired Ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi—to host the session.
